据说朱元璋做了皇帝后，有个从前的小伙伴来到皇宫，想让朱元璋给他封个官或者赏赐点什么。为了让朱元璋勾起儿时的回忆，此人跪在朱元璋面前说道：“万岁，还记得吗？小时候，咱们都替别人放牛。有一天，我们在芦花荡里，偷来豆子放在瓦罐里煮，大家争抢着吃，结果罐子破了，豆子撒了一地，汤都泼在地上。你只顾从地上抢豆子吃，却不小心连红草叶子也塞进嘴里。叶子梗在喉咙，你憋得脸都红了，吓得大哭起来。我出主意叫你用青菜叶子放在手上一起吞下去，才把红草叶子吞下肚里的。。。” 当着文武百官的面，朱元璋怒不可遏，大喝一声：“哪里来的疯子，打出去！” 结果，那个人被赶了出去。另一个当年的小伙伴听说这件事之后，也来面见朱元璋：“万岁，还记得我吗？当年微臣随驾扫荡芦州府，打破罐州域，汤元帅在逃，拿住豆将军，红孩儿当关，多亏菜将军。” 话句句属实却不失体面，朱元璋龙颜大悦，想起了当年自己和小伙伴们同甘共苦，当即给此人封了个御林军总管。
