Over the weekend, I was back in Singapore to process some documents at the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority and I observed that the place was flooded by mainland Chinese either applying for citizenship or passport. This got me thinking: these people are unlikely to vote against the establishment, since by opting to come to Singapore, they are buying into the system hook, line and sinker. Clearly, this will become a major challenge for opposition parties campaigning for change.
What I foresee is that the huge influx of Chinese immigrants will dilute the political clout of local Singaporeans who are unhappy with the PAP-led government. If you think along this line, you’ll realise that Lee Hsien Loong‘s vote-buying comment may not be a slip of tongue after all.
