An Iraqi-flag cake served to visiting US Congressmen
The above photo and caption from FORTUNE magazine (“Mission Impossible“, 17 September 2007) struck me as pretty symbolic in the way Iraq has been treated by the invaders. Like the cake, the country has basically been divided and gobbled up by Republican hawks who have been eyeing Iraqi assets.
More tellingly, while the Bush administration tried to privatise state-owned enterprises in Iraq, “all that remained of Saddam’s economic policies was a law restricting trade unions and collective bargaining”. There were also no Pentagon or State Department funds earmarked for reopening the shuttered factories of state-owned enterprises. Just goes to show how serious the US is when it comes to rebuilding Iraq.
