The Story of Forever Young

My favourite band. Their debut album featured gems like “Big In Japan”, “Forever Young”, “The Jet Set”, “Summer In Berlin”, “Sounds Like A Melody”, etc. They then followed that up with a second album, “Afternoons In Utopia”, that could rival any concept album released by The Alan Parsons Project.

Over the years, Alphaville’s discography expanded to include albums like “The Breathtaking Blue” (1989) and “Prostitute” (1994). Each release showcased their evolving sound and willingness to experiment with new musical directions. For instance, “The Breathtaking Blue” was accompanied by a unique film project titled “Songlines“, where nine directors, including Godfrey Reggio of “Koyaanisqatsi” fame, created visual interpretations of the album’s tracks.

Despite their success, Alphaville was initially reluctant to perform live. Marian Gold admitted that they didn’t feel confident enough as musicians and preferred the safety of the studio environment. This hesitation to tour was a point of contention with their management but underscored the band’s commitment to producing polished studio work.

Their ability to craft songs that resonate across generations has solidified their place in music history, ensuring that their legacy, much like their most famous song, remains “Forever Young”.
