Hong Kong’s Court of Appeal has ruled that a couple’s assets should be equally divided upon divorce, no matter what each spouse brought to the union. According to its latest judgment, marriage is a “partnership of equals” and “there is no room for discrimination between husband and wife”. Paul McCartney will most likely disagree.
Previously, the courts had divided assets based on an assessment of the parties’ needs, with the remainder going to the main financial contributor.
Food for thought if you’re thinking about tying the knot.
